As a planning director you are a leader who opens the aperture of opportunity on the account. You are a comrade in arms with account and creative. Through directly managing junior planners &/or mentoring other Ogilvy strategists you reinforce your own skillset. You aren’t just delegating; you create opportunities for people around you. You have a perspective on brands & consumers and you speak from knowledge and experience: granting you authority.
You own a mid – sized or are the second lieutenant on a large client. You are respected by clients; trusted by creative and few meetings are seen as complete without you. You can front a pitch and know how and when to determine a course of action for new projects. You can run Big IdeaL and Fusion workshops as well as being conversant enough on other types of strategy such as CRM, content and social to be in the discussion as a brand advocate.
Acquiring new hard skills is less vital at this rather than working in higher profile and higher stakes settings. “Soft” skills become increasingly important including how to give feedback, prioritize and manage.
