  • Overview

    Ogilvy is seeking a middle-level communications professional as a Senior Account Executive to work off-site to provide media relations support in a government client’s busy press office. This opportunity requires an exceptionally organized professional who can seamlessly manage the rigors of an important and often demanding government communications environment.

     

    The successful candidate will be on the frontlines of a busy press shop talking to the media every day about complex, hot-button issues. No two days are exactly alike. The candidate must have the ability to assimilate new information quickly, be attentive to detail, and have a strong work ethic. He or she will need to quickly become familiar with the client and its spokespeople, hot topics, relevant key reporters and producers, and complex messaging.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist the press team in the day-to-day operations of the communications office;
    • Screen incoming media calls and initiate responses promptly; prioritize inquiries to ensure the most critical matters are handled or responded to on tight deadlines;
    • Manage interview requests from a variety of media outlets, ranging from top-tier national broadcast and print outlets to local outlets; coordinate with Institute spokespeople to fulfill interview requests; receive appropriate clearances; prepare talking points and/or background materials; and sit in on interviews as needed;
    • Participate in the development of media outreach plans; draft media advisories and releases; develop and update messaging; pitch stories; and conduct media monitoring and reporting;
    • Lead and complete other assignments on behalf of the press team, including those involving scientific or health issues;
    • Write and submit stories for internal publications;
    • Write monthly press reports and other quarterly reports as needed;
    • Oversee/coordinate the grantee research paper review process, including contacting journals to receive publication date, coordinating the press outreach to coincide with embargo date, and working with project officers to provide information for press outreach consideration; and
    • Interface and report regularly to the Ogilvy project director and other members of the Ogilvy team.

    Qualifications

    • Work off-site, full-time, in Bethesda, MD (additional interviews and government clearance will be required);
    • 5-7 years of public relations experience, preferably in a public relations or government agency environment;
    • BA/BS in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field;
    • Must be media-savvy and have the ability to think strategically about issues and message development
    • Curious, a lifelong learner
    • An understanding of the dynamics and workings of the agency’s process as it relates to the client’s business
    • Direct media relations experience a must; relationships with health or science media preferred;
    • Strong multi-tasking skills and the composure required to display grace under pressure;
    • Proven client relations skills and the poise and professionalism required to interact with the client’s senior staff;
    • Superior writing and editing skills;
    • Strong project management and organizational skills; and
    • Proven ability to work within a fast-paced and highly collaborative team environment.
